Activision Blizzard shareholders have approved the planned acquisition by Microsoft. The plans were voted in at a shareholders’ meeting with 98 percent of the votes in favour.

The result of the vote will be forwarded to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the stock market regulator. Presumably, companies hope this will reduce the chances of the takeover being halted.

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced its intention to acquire Activision Blizzard for $95 per share, or about $70 billion in total. If all goes well, the deal should be completed by the end of June 2023.

Microsoft has been expanding its influence in the gaming market in recent years. Last year, the company took over game developer Bethesda, known for Doom and Fallout, among others. In the past, Microsoft actually made some cuts in the gaming department. Budget cuts in late 2008 and early 2009 shut down Age of Empires producer Ensemble Studios and Flight Simulator developer Aces Game Studio, among others.
