As you may remember, the Central African Republic (CAR) became the second country in history to adopt bitcoin as its national currency after El Salvador adopted the cryptocurrency last year.

This is reported by the Government of the Central African Republic. the Bitcoin adoption bill was unanimously approved by the country’s parliamentThis is reported by Reuters and BBC News.

CAR President Faustin-Archange Touadéra’s office said the move “will improve conditions for citizens of Central Africa“and I would single out RCA as”one of the most courageous and far-sighted countries in the worldor”.

However, the motives for this move confuse geopolitical analysts and financial experts. The CAR is a landlocked country, rich in resources such as gold and uranium, but remains one of the poorest countries in the world (as is El Salvador).

It has been ravaged by civil war since 2012 and only 11% of its 4.8 million inhabitants have internet access.. It is one of six countries in Africa that uses the Central African CFA franc, a regional currency backed by France and pegged to the euro, as its currency.

Some speculate that the adoption of Bitcoin by the CARs is an attempt to undermine the CFA franc and to rebuke the country’s former colonial power, France.

Others say the move may be related to the CAR’s close relationship with Russia. The CAR was one of the few countries to abstain from a vote at the United Nations condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while the country’s government was condemned for deploying mercenaries from the Russian Wagner Group to fight insurgent groups.

The context, given systemic corruption and international sanctions against the Russian partner, is suspicious.Thierry Virculon, an analyst at the French Institute of International Relations, told AFP.
