Lithium-ion batteries are a much more recent innovation than we think, and have only been around for 25 years. gaining popularity in recent yearsas they have proven their worth for powering small electronic devices such as laptops and mobile phones, though electric vehicles.

Well, the new material developed by the Russian research center Skoltech seems to have found the first for lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles.

In particular, we are talking about a nickel-rich transition metal oxide, but with a modified microstructure, which gives more energy per unit volume. In addition, this should extend the life of the cathode and the battery as a whole.

Tests carried out after its modification confirmed that the resulting material had the same storage capacity. Energy per unit mass than those currently on the market, but had a higher energy density, which allowed to accumulate more energy in the same space.

“We have improved two widely used materials of this type, achieving an increase in energy density of 10-25%. This means smaller cathodes, more compact batteries and therefore more energy storage capacity for the same volume. As an added bonus, the material wears out more slowly the researchers explain.

A new opportunity for lithium-ion batteries?

Perhaps with this new battery will get new opportunities from lithium ions electric vehicles because we are faced with material destined for scarcity, since most of the global supply chain belongs to China, and lithium reserves insufficient to meet the expected level of demand in the electric vehicle market and other sectors.

However, the problem still exists. Also, as you may remember from the various news stories of recent years, lithium-ion batteries have also gained a reputation for being flammable, so they were not used on a large scale.

WHAT IS BATTERY-MP4

It is for this reason that we are already talking about sodium batteries. In addition, China’s CATL launched a sodium-ion battery last year for the electric vehicle market with a specific energy of 160 Wh/kg, more than half that of today’s lithium batteries.

There is also talk about batteries LiFePO4, which are positioned as the batteries of the future for electric vehicles and other devices thanks to its great advantages.

As for big future projects with this modified lithium-ion battery, the researchers They say they will continue to investigate. make the material even more compact (save more energy) and efficient for future electric vehicles.
