Diesel, petrol or electricity. What type of car is better to buy today?

Energy prices are rising non-stop. Those who depend on a car for their daily life should calculate and compare whether they want to change cars.

In particular, in the compact car segment, there is a wide variety of powertrains, from classic dieselwhich here represents at 220 dpassing through hybrid system (not pluggable) that Toyota has been using for almost a quarter of a century and here represents corollawhich is supported by a small battery that recovers energy when coasting or braking.

Effective Formula Mazda3 e-Skyactiv X The bet is on a large displacement (two liters) and a high compression ratio, like a diesel, instead of a conventional turbo. This is done to improve efficiency. In fact, it reaches a range of up to 677 kilometers.

We also bring here a plug-in hybrid model, such as the Peugeot 308 Hybrid 180, which allows you to cover short distances on a 100% electric path: in this case it was 32 km.

Can you travel with a Tesla Model 3 without a travel forecast?

And finally, a purely electric car like the VW ID.3 with a 77 kWh battery that can travel 366 km before it needs to be plugged in again.

To determine the winner and find out which type of power plant is the most profitable, we calculated fixed costs over four years. We can tell you that while doing the numbers, we were surprised by the result.

Plug-in Hybrid: Peugeot 308 Hybrid 180 – Cost per kilometer: €0.36

The goal is to find out if the 308 plug-in hybrid offers the best of both worlds or if it’s just a bad compromise. What speaks in his favor is that during this test he was able to drive 32 kilometers with zero emissions.

In addition, its hybrid mechanics are powerful and silent. Of course, having two engines, the weight increases. With a weight of 1651 kg (only the VW ID.3 weighs more), consumption is reduced.

The petrol block consumes 6.2 l / 100 km when the battery is discharged, which is not bad at all; but the power consumption of the electric motor on the road (29 kWh) is excessive. That’s expensive for a large electric SUV like the Audi e-tron, but not for a compact.

The price is also a little high. At €34,700, that’s €7,000 more than the Mazda3. And the fact that it is ahead of Toyota Corolla in terms of cost per kilometer is only due to the state discount of 5,000 euros. Without it, it would be the second most expensive after the Class A Mercedes at 45 cents/km.

Gasoline (compression ignition) Mazda3 e-Skyactiv X – cost per kilometer: 0.35 euros

A dashboard with easy-to-read classic round clocks, a joystick-like six-speed gearbox and an interior stripped down to the bare necessities. For techies, the Mazda 3 is a rehab clinic on the go.

Its 2.0-litre petrol engine runs smoothly and isn’t surprisingly powerful despite its 186 horsepower and compressor.

The good news is that consumption in this test was only 5.3 liters. Considering the Mazda is cheaper than the rest and has less cushioning, it is the ultimate winner with a cost per kilometer of just 35 cents.

Hybrid: Toyota Corolla 180H – cost per kilometer: €0.39

A lot of hard plastic, a peculiar design … Toyota has not made life easier for its customers in recent years. But, at the same time, it offers a completely reliable and economical product. The Japanese are the pioneers of hybrid cars because they have been offering this technology since the first Prius in 1997.

And that’s how you keep going corolla. Both engines (petrol and electric) work together exemplary. The curb weight is only 1455 km, the average consumption is 4.9 liters. Everything is very easy and simple. But since the Toyota Corolla is not available as a plug-in hybrid, there is no government rebate and the cost per kilometer is the second highest at €0.39.

Diesel: Mercedes A 220 d – cost per kilometer: 0.48 euros

Those who have to drive long distances should appreciate the advantages of a diesel engine (not forgetting that modern diesel engines are much cleaner than those of yesteryear).

At the same time, the Class A 220 d offers 400 Nm of torque and 190 hp, which allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100 in seven seconds and declare a top speed of 235 km/h.

And, despite these good performance, in this test, he showed a consumption of only 4.2 liters, which corresponds to a mileage of 1020 km. Can you think of something better and more efficient to make endless trips?

It is true that the latter remains in line with the cost per kilometer, which was 48 euro cents, but this is due to its high purchase price, which is 42,139 euros, and the fact that we have not added any additional services.

Diesel, petrol or electricity. What type of propeller is the most suitable?

To give you an idea, even if this is a fictional example, with a base price of around 34,000 euros, it would be a winner.

Electric: VW ID.3 Pro S – cost per kilometer: €0.36

The great-grandson of the VW Beetle quietly enters the scene. ID.3 wants to be the new Volkswagen Golf. Unfortunately, it is inferior in quality in direct comparison with its fellow incinerator.

If you drive those miles, you are more interested in buying a diesel car than a petrol one.

At 4.26 meters long, it offers plenty of interior space and has the largest trunk we’ve seen here (385-1267 litres). With a large 77 kWh battery in the Pro-S version and a consumption of 21 kWh per 100 kilometers, it manages to cover at least 366 kilometers.

That it’s the most expensive of the bunch, at €42,325, shouldn’t bother us, as being a pure electric car it gets a €7,000 discount with the Moves plan.

Thus, from the cost of a kilometer of 48 cents, it turns into 36 cents. Now VW just needs to improve the quality…

Our opinion

Five different ways to be as efficient as possible. Classic diesel loses here, its cost per kilometer is 48 cents, which is due to its high purchase price.

The lack of government funding is pushing the classic Toyota hybrid into the background. Moves plan discounts help 308 and ID.3 a lot. But the surprise comes from Mazda3’s Skyactiv X petrol engine, which benefits from how little it absorbs because the truth is that it has the highest fuel costs of all.
