In Belgium the criminal code now includes the crime of ecodidiummaking it the . is becoming first European nation to provide for a criminal conviction “for serious and lasting damage to the environment on a large scale”. This term includes all acts related to: destruction of the environment and naturewhich provides for penalties ranging from 10 to 20 years in prison.

There are currently only 11 countries in the world that provide this types of offenses: Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Vietnam and France. For several years, many civil society actors have been advocating for ecocide to be recognized as a crime in the international right or in Statute of the Criminal Court of Rome internationally as the fifth crime against peace and security.

However, the road is still uphill, although an opinion has been adopted proposing amendments to the revised EU directive on environmental protection by the European Parliament Environment Committee. Over there European Commission is still reluctant to view ecocide as an international crime.
