Tesla announced that it will reveal the design of its North American connector. Therefore, perhaps in the future we will see that it becomes popular in other territories besides the one mentioned. Of course, the electric car itself knows for sure that the CCS (Combined Charging System) connector is positioning itself as the ultimate standard in the rest of the world. Despite its advantages at the hardware level, the mass adoption of the connector is unlikely to be quick.

Why release a design so far? According to Tesla, determined to help the world transition to sustainable energy. The above, of course, implies not only the development of technologies for one’s own use, but also some proposals that can be shared and standardized among various players that make up an ever-growing sector. Both electric vehicle manufacturers and charging service providers.

“In line with our mission to accelerate the global transition to sustainable energy, today we are unveiling our electric vehicle connector design to the world. We are inviting charging network operators and vehicle manufacturers to host the Tesla EV Connector and Charging Port, now called North American. Charging Standard (NACS) on its equipment and vehicles.”

Tesla, of course, was not going to miss the opportunity to highlight the advantages of the North American charging standard over CCS. Those led by Elon Musk note that NAKS is Significantly smaller – 50% to be exact – and offers double the charging power.

Interestingly, Tesla indicates that its proprietary connector most widely used in North Americawhich should surprise no one, for obvious reasons. “There are twice as many NACS vehicles as CCS, and the Tesla Supercharger network has 60% more NACS positions than all CCS-equipped networks combined.”

While such a movement cannot be criticized because a company will always be happy to share its technology to create or improve standards, it should be remembered that Tesla did not want to take the CCS train in North America. Why should other manufacturers do the opposite by introducing NACS into their vehicles and stations?

As mentioned at the beginning, CCS is the preferred standard in Europe and other regions that are making the leap towards electric mobility. Adopting a different connector, at least for now, doesn’t make much sense.. What would help set the global standard would be if Tesla didn’t turn its back on the combined charging system in the United States.

Despite the above, Tesla is confident that NACS can be adopted. In the US, for example, there is still room for further distribution to freight traffic. “Network operators already have plans to include NACS in their chargers, so Tesla owners can look forward to charging on other networks without adapters.” They emphasize that Connector technology makes it easy to accept: “This is a purely electrical and mechanical interface, independent of use case and communication protocol.”

Tesla concluded his post by saying that he is currently working with various agencies to have his connector recognized as a publicly available standard. Any company interested in reviewing the NACS project can download all the necessary files for free.
