YouTuber and Apple fan Luke Miani has managed to recreate the very expensive Studio Display with an old 5K iMac from 2014. The do-it-yourself PC has almost all the functionality of a brand new Studio Display, but for a price tag of around 830 Euros, it’s less than half the purchase price of a Studio Display. And that was before every other part of the iMac was sold.
For this project, Miani purchased a fully working 2014 5K iMac from Ebay. The panels are largely similar, as the Studio Display has the same resolution. And that’s the only requirement for this build: a working display. All other parts including the motherboard, processor, ram and other parts are removed from the screen and possibly resold. The only thing missing is a webcam that Miani can connect to the custom new circuit board/adapter with a USB extension cable.
The result is a slightly less elegant Studio Display replica with largely the same features. Miani quickly admits that the iMac panel of 2014 had to make some sacrifices in terms of image quality; contrast and color range is slightly less than the new panel. That’s why he recommends a 2015 or 2017 iMac for interested home repairers.
Total cost of this build (in dollars):
- $620 for iMac (used)
- $179 for adapter board (new)
- $32 for camera (new)
- $40 for additional cables and iFixit removal kit (new)
- Total: $871 (for sale of unnecessary iMac parts)
