Indie Offline Call This autonomous vehicle competition Hosted by Energy Systems Network. Teams from universities around the world are competing in a series of challenges to develop technologies that could accelerate the commercialization of fully autonomous vehicles.
These competitions are a platform for students to excel in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
One of the problems was break the world speed record for an unmanned vehicle. The PoliMOVE team from Politecnico di Milano teamed up with the University of Alabama to modify a Dallara AV-21 autonomous race car to break the record by leaving it in 309.3 km/h. You can see it in this video:
The record was broken on the legendary runway at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the same runway where long-awaited NASA space shuttles landed.
As we can see in the video, Dallara AV-21 gradually accelerates autonomously, until approaching 310 km/hthe maximum speed currently reached by a vehicle without a driver.
It may not sound like it’s out of the ordinary for a car to accelerate in a straight line, but there’s a lot of programming work behind it. Especially in the case of university students, not professionals.
On October 23, 21 universities from around the world formed 9 teams to participate in various self-driving car programming tests. The victory went to the car of the Technical University of Munich. He took home a million dollar prize.
On January 7, CES 2022 hosted the first head-to-head race of autonomous racing cars.
We are not very clear about the future Indy or Formula 1 racing with autonomous cars only have the same success as racing with human pilots. But, as we said, the goal of the Indy Autonomous Challenge is to develop new software and technologies for conventional autonomous cars, not to compete.
