Although there have been talks for several years about the possibility Tesla to build a plant in Mexico, it has never been so close. According to information from Millennium, The electric car manufacturer is about to announce the construction of a plant in Monterrey, Nuevo León.. It is worth noting that neither the state government nor Tesla made a decision on this issue.

However, as the aforementioned media outlets always report, some details need to be clarified, including the amount of investment. After a few outstanding issues are resolved, construction will start in early 2023.

“Tesla will arrive in Santa Catarina. The investment will be completed in the coming weeks and will be announced after the end of the year. The obligation is that they must be completed immediately after the start of 2023; we know that they will bring employment and will be located in the only available area, which is located to the west of this municipality. You can’t say more because there is a confidentiality agreement.”

Mexico has established itself for several decades as one of the largest car manufacturers in Latin America. However, it is also true that the majority of exported cars are still equipped with an internal combustion engine. The big change came when Ford announced in 2020 that the Mustang Mach-E would be built at its Cuautitlán Izcalli plant in Mexico State. In fact, last November they reached 150,000 units.

The Tesla plant has been targeted by several Mexican states.

Tesla Gigafactory in Shanghai

Tesla’s presence was obviously the great desire of several states in Mexico. The governors of Guanajuato and Jalisco, for example, made no secret of their interest in allying with Elon Musk to build a factory in their respective states. In the end, the company would have opted for Nuevo Leon, whose government is headed by Samuel Garcia.

Interestingly, at the end of October Elon Musk he was seen in Monterrey with Samuel Garcia, Emmanuel Loo (Deputy Minister of Investments of the State Ministry of Economics) and Ivan Rivas (Minister of Economics). Although the authorities never made the tycoon’s visit official, Garcia himself admitted that he had met “the richest man in the world.”

Sources close to the meeting indicated that Garcia shares his interest in Elon Musk so that Tesla can invest in Nuevo Leon. On December 8, he announced that a historic investment for his enterprise was approaching.

Of course, the Governor’s efforts to forge a partnership with Tesla date back to the first half of the year. last april, Garcia visited the Tesla Gigafactory in Austin.. He claimed to have reached an agreement to export cars over the Columbia Bridge, located on the border of Nuevo Leon with Texas.

In addition, he said that “All the aluminum used to make Tesla vehicles comes from the company in Nuevo Leon.”. The latter would be key for Tesla in choosing the northern state of Mexico, as having suppliers in the region greatly improves its logistics.

Source Millennium pointed out that Tesla already bought the land where he will locate his plant in Monterrey. Everything would be done confidentially to prevent the price from skyrocketing. The automaker does not even appear as an owner in the property register yet.

If the information from the indicated source is correct, then matter of weeks for Tesla to confirm its first plant in Mexico.
