It’s been a few years since the official introduction of the Tesla Roadster 2.0, but we still don’t know when we’ll finally see production of a Tesla supercar. And while the passage of time hasn’t helped clear up many of the great unknowns about the car, we now know at least it won’t look like a prototype. At least in some key sections.
The main reason for the delay in the release of the Tesla Roadster 2.0 is not the complexity of its development and production, but the main focus of Tesla, which is immersed in in large-scale production of other, more affordable modelscompared to the limited production of other vehicles such as the roadster.
As Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla’s chief designer, told in a podcast Ride the Lightning, the company continues to develop the aforementioned supercar. And when it finally hits the market, it will far surpass the already impressive performance that was offered at its launch in 2017.
We are developing a car. I think they know that we have priorities as a company, and the priorities are mass electrification. And the roadster is not a mass product. (…) We are seriously working on it. And I think the time we’ve spent has allowed us to really improve on all the numbers that we set out to set when we debuted. The starting point for the Tesla Roadster 2.0 will be the S Plaid.
Tesla’s chief designer didn’t give specific numbers, but he did confirm the direction the company wants to take with the Tesla Roadster 2.0. Especially considering that in these years Tesla S Plaid took some links for speed and acceleration, which not so long ago could only be seen in the aforementioned supercar.
In fact, Franz von Holzhausen himself wanted to draw a sort of parallel between the future Tesla Roadaster 2.0 in terms of performance and ease of use and the current S Plaid. Last This would already be a great starting point. because, as we say, the Model S Plaid already matches some of the general characteristics of the Roadster 2.0 prototype, with the exception of autonomy and a top speed of over 250 mph:
“I think if you can extrapolate the performance and usability of the Model S Plaid and you can imagine where that might lead, then I think your imagination will take you where we are going. The roadster will be, and it’s worth it. Come to think of it, the Model S Plaid basically lives up to everything we said a roadster could do, which seemed impossible for a car at the time. So imagine. Let your imagination run free”
