Western Digital made a presentation about the flash partition features and performance for BiCS6 on investor day. This flash storage is being developed with Kioxia as the successor to BiCS6, which will go into production later this year. This generation will also have a qlc version where only tlc was mentioned before.
BiCS6 has 162 layers, less than competitors Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix, which use 176 while Intel is still at 144. However, the density of Kioxia is higher because other factors, such as the surface and distance of the cells, also play a role. with 68mm2nd At 15.1 gigabits per terabit, or square meter, the density is slightly higher than that of competitors.
qlc’s weakness often lies in slow write speeds. At 60MB/s, the write performance of BiCS4 (not available as BiCS5 qlc) should be more than six times and 50 percent that of Intel’s 144-layer qlc.
Some figures are already being shared for BiCS+, which will be available at the end of 2023. With more than 200 layers, 55 percent more bits per unit area can be achieved. Read speeds will increase by up to 60% and read performance by up to 15%.
