Satellite provider Inmarsat’s station in Burum, Friesland will ensure that internet providers cannot use the full 5G bandwidth until January 1, 2024. This is evident from the recommendation of an independent committee evaluating the National Frequency Plan at the behest of the judge, which will likely be accepted by Micky Adriaansens, Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate for the VVD.

Therefore, it will take another year and a half for 5G to offer Dutch customers noticeably faster speeds than 4G. The 3.5 GHz band is used by Inmarsat, among other things, to receive emergency signals from ships and therefore cannot be used. The company is working on a move to Greece that should be completed around 2024.

The frequency auction will take place in mid-2023 and commissioning is scheduled for December 1 of that year, but this could be delayed until 2025. Until then, licensees will only be able to use 220 of the 300 megahertz bandwidth for 5G.
