Apple is working on an update that will allow users of its mobile operating system iOS to install applications that do not come directly from its official store.

These tests are running on iOS 17.2, which will make it easier to send and install apps via AiDrop.

The Digital Markets Act (DMA) is a European regulation that aims to promote a fairer and more competitive market in the distribution of mobile applications on platforms such as Android and iOS.

This law, which will come into force as of March next year, will significantly affect companies such as Google and Apple, which operate digital stores such as Play Store and App Store, respectively.

These antitrust authorities pointed out that both companies implemented a ‘duplex’ by controlling the distribution, installation, updating and removal of applications within their ecosystems.

On Apple’s part, the efforts made in iOS 17 are expected to pave the way for greater flexibility in app installation and distribution. This expectation seems to come true with the arrival of the iOS 17.2 update.

iOS 17.2 is currently in beta for developers On October 26.

Developers with access to this release have observed that it is now possible to upload IPA files, which are packages containing compressed data, from applications destined for the App Store via AirDrop.

This functionality, although currently in testing, opens the door to “sideloading” or installing apps from sources outside of the official Apple store, i.e. the App Store.

The introduction of this feature in iOS 17.2 marks a significant change in Apple’s policy on installing applications on its devices.
