Technology is constantly evolving, and one of the elements of mobile devices that makes great strides is, subscriber identity module, better known as SIM card, which is nothing more than a removable smart card used in mobile phones and modems.

While manufacturers were making it smaller and smaller, it has now disappeared and there is a new tool called eSIM.

(

When we say SIM cards are disappearing, the tangible thing is evolving and eSIM or virtual SIM can replace it, giving users the alternative of activating through their trusted carrier and forgetting the chip, for the most part sometimes this was more of a headache.

Lately, Apple has announced that the iPhone 14 has dual eSIM support. This means that the mobile phone offers the possibility to use nano-SIM and eSIM at the same time.

However, there are many devices that also enable this feature on the hardware of brands such as Samsung, Huawei, Honor, Oppo, Google and Sony.
Cell phone growth in Colombia has tremendous growth. According to figures from the Ministry of Information Technology and Communications (Mintic), at the end of the first quarter of 2022 there were approximately 76 million active mobile phone lines in the country, about 11 million more than reported in the same period of 2019. ).

Claro Colombia product expert Gustavo Aldana spoke with EL TIEMPO to explain how eSIM works.

Notes What is sought is to leave virtually what we know physically in terms of this part of the hardware, to have a necessary line. The thing is, eSIM now simplifies the development process for device manufacturers who want to have more room to improve other aspects such as battery, camera and storage.

This advance also avoids physical operations such as inserting, inserting and removing the SIM card from the device.

An example of its benefits in this regard is international travel, where it is sufficient to make a schedule with the operator to make the necessary change to the line with a virtual alternative. This process is easier and more functional as well as preventing damage to the card due to handling or even loss of the card.

“Also, it would be a help for the environment to the extent that it doesn’t create more pollution with plastic,” he added.

The security remains the same as what the SIM card provides, and users with eSIM have the same services as with the traditional card. Its operation depends on reading a QR code that can only be activated on a device, and to disable it, the mobile phone is removed through the configuration.

There is now an alternative to smartwatches from Claro called Claro Sync, where they can use their phone number on their smartwatch to stay connected even when they are away from their mobile phones. This service costs 15,000 pesos per month.

One of the biggest challenges this new SIM alternative has is that people are starting to trust it. Operators already have the option to activate at no additional cost and all users have to do is to verify their mobile phone’s reference is compatible and then go to different customer service centers to activate eSIM, which is free.
