The European Commission (EC) has identified 19 major digital platforms as the first to comply with the new compliance requirements. Transparency about content and minors protection on the internet, including Twitter, TikTok or Instagram, as well as Wikipedia or Zalando.

It will also prohibit them from displaying personalized ads to minors; and Companies will need to let users know why they’re recommending certain content based on their profile.

In this sense, they will have to give citizens the opportunity to know that the information they see on the internet is not based on their profile.

Along the same lines, the rule prohibits the use of “dark patterns”, cheats are designed. deceiving and manipulating consumers into making decisions that are likely against their interests.

Companies will have to produce annual reports to verify that they comply with these requirements, and both authorities and outside researchers will have access to the design of their algorithms that determine the content users see online.

A set of requirements that platforms with 45 million users must meet, and if not met, The European Commission can impose fines of up to 6% of their annual worldwide turnover.

“With the digital services law, European citizens and businesses will benefit from a safer internet. “With great size comes great responsibility,” said Thierry Breton, Commissioner for the Internal Market.
