author George RR Martinduring an interview with The Independent, he spoke about his popular saga Game of Thronesand made a parallel with the Star Warsmaking a comparison mainly on the number of deaths seen in the respective stories, and Martin has shown that more characters die in Star Wars than in Game of Thrones.
Here’s what George RR Martin said about it:
Star Wars has killed more people than me! In the first Star Wars, the entire planet of Alderaan, home to some twenty billion people, is blown up. But you know what? Nobody cares because although all the inhabitants of Alderaan are dead, we don’t know them. We don’t perceive their deaths emotionally, they are just a statistic. If you’re going to write about death, you have to make it feel.
Obviously the thought goes to memorable Game of Thrones moments like the Wedding of Blood, but it has to be said that practically all the deaths in The Throne of Swords turn out to be significant. Precisely for this, Martin pointed out that it is precisely his intention to give the reader the emotional perception of feeling a strong sensation at the death of one of his characters.
