Apparently Warner Bros. focus on a “new” fantasy world for cinema, perhaps with the aim of creating a successful franchise: The Wizard of Oz, a great classic created by L. Frank Baum titled “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” and came to the collective imagination with the 1939 children’s feature film directed by Victor Fleming starring Judy Garland as the lead actor. The newly announced new version is led by Kenya Barris.
Barris, who will soon make his directorial debut with Netflix comedy You People, has extensive experience as a comics scriptwriter with films such as Barbershop: The Next Cut, Girls Trip and Prince Looking for Wife 2, as well as 2020’s The Witches of Zemeckis and operas for TV such as Black- is H.
Details about the new production have not yet been announced, but it seems that it will be a kind of reinterpretation of the classic film, keeping the musical format but with a modern touch.
Oddly enough, the original work was seen and revised many times before Fleming’s release, but after that it was the subject of more imaginative sequels, prequels, spin-offs, and various rip-offs rather than actual remakes.
