The official statement is rather laconic for now:
The Queen passed away peacefully this afternoon in Barlmoral. The King and Queen Consort remain in Barlmoral tonight and return to London in the morning.
What is certain is that the announcement implicitly announces Prince Charles’ immediate transition to the new monarch, even if the times and methods are to be seen.
Elizabeth II was 96 years old and lived through the most historical events of the last century: it is impossible to give even a brief overview of the importance of such a historical figure. Suffice it to mention that she is at least the queen to whom the world of film and TV has dedicated the most tributes, performances and biopics, from The Queen with Helen Mirren to the famous series The Crown on Netflix.
Not all movies have seen her as a protagonist, but often a present figure or witness of the story (for example in “The King’s Speech”). Many actresses who have played her throughout her career: from Olivia Colman to Emma Thompson, from Claire Foy to Imelda Staunton, whose interpretation will be “posthumous”, as we will admire her in the next season of the Netflix series.
Countless tributes have been dedicated to her by British cinema, but also European and American in general: from The Minions to Mr. bean. Furthermore, Danny Boyle’s short film is unforgettable Happy and glorious Made for the 2012 Olympics, in which the Queen plays herself, accompanied by none other than… Daniel Craig’s James Bond.
