Immediately after the film’s release Elvis the news of the development of a feature film on Priscillathe historic wife of the king of rock ‘n’ roll, who will bear the signature of Sofia Coppola. The filmmaker recently spoke about the differences between her feature film and Baz Luhrmann’s.
In the words of Sofia Coppola:
I liked Baz’s approach to his film, which developed like a collage. It’s slightly different from my project, though, because in Elvis, Priscilla’s figure was marginal, and I’m glad he didn’t go deep into that story so I can do it. I never thought we were working on the same thing. I’m happy with the success of Elvis, and now the public will soon have a new production dedicated to Priscilla. I think it might be interesting to have two different interpretations of the same period.
Speaking of Priscilla’s character, the filmmaker added:
I love being able to dig into the roots of American style, because Priscilla is the quintessence of the glamor icon. I’ve always been interested in his story and that kind of perspective, because I thought about what it would be like growing up in Graceland as a teenager. She went through various stages of a woman’s growth in an enhanced environment, much like Marie Antoinette.
The Marie Antoinette film alone is a different kind of biopic that, as Sofia Coppola pointed out, bears many similarities to the Priscilla project. The filmmaker has almost always emphasized female characters, starting with her film debut with The Garden of the Virgin Suicide. Furthermore, the pop style that could characterize the Priscilla feature is a brand that is strongly associated with the Marie Antoinette film, which received mixed reviews at the time of its release in 2006.
As for the film about Elvis, Priscilla Presley herself had the chance to see the film and be involved in some way thanks to a private screening. The ex-wife of the king of rock ‘n’ roll praised the feature film.
Baz Luhrmann hosted a private screening at Warner Bros. for me and Jerry Schilling – he said – The story focuses on Elvis and Colonel Parker. It’s a brilliant and very creative story that only Baz could make. Austin Butler as Elvis is exceptional. Halfway through the movie, Jerry and I looked at each other and said, “Wow!” Austin knew he had to wear heavy clothes, he was very nervous, but he was good. Tom Hanks did Colonel Parker, and how he played him! There are two sides to this person that Jerry and I have known. The story, as you know, does not have a happy ending. I think you will understand the path of Elvis a little better thanks to the film, thanks to a director who put his heart and soul into this feature film.
