The feature film is produced by A-1 Pictures and directed by Ayako Kōno, with character designs by Kento Toya and music by Yuki Kajiura, while Yasuyuki Kai directs the action sequences.

A hero manages to free the imprisoned players and put an end to the nightmare. That game is called SWORD ART ONLINE. This story takes place long before the “Lightning Bolt” and the “Black Swordsman” were known by these names… Kirito and Asuna have been trapped in the deadly game Sword Art Online for two months now. The two have reached the fifth floor, centered on the ruins. As they venture through dungeons, catacombs and vast labyrinths, they encounter increasingly terrifying monsters, which Asuna cannot handle. But above all, they have to compete against various Player Killers, ie players who kill other players just for fun. The fight for survival is getting bloodier.

Sword Art Online Progressive is a reboot series written by Kawahara herself that delves deeper into where it all began: on the first floor of Aincrad. In 2021, a new animated film series based on Progressive was launched. The first film in the series, Aria of a Starless Night, a reboot of the Aincrad storyline seen from Asuna’s point of view rather than Kirito’s, debuted in Japan at No. 1 at the weekend box office and was a long-lasting hit. 10 weeks in the cinema.
