Well, it seems that both versions were connected at some point in their history, and the name of one is a direct consequence of the otheraccording to a report from Diversity.
Avatar: The Last Airbender began its broadcast about four years before the premiere Avatar, a work of the same name by James Cameron. Regardless, Nickelodeon was limited when it came to calling it an animated series simply Avatarlike their original plans.
According to Giancarlo Volpe, the animator responsible for directing up to 19 episodes of the animated series, James Cameron’s rights were responsible. They comment on it it was in 2004 when they found out that the series needed to be renamed fully Avatar: The Last Airbender (The last airbender in English) because James Cameron had a play of the same name registered and running.
