During a lengthy interview with Famitsu, producer Naoki Yoshida revealed that: Final Fantasy XVI won’t have a turn based combat system because it is considered distasteful in the eyes of younger players.

I come from a generation that grew up with turn-based RPGs. I think I understand how interesting and compelling they can be,” Yoshida said. “On the other hand, I’ve seen a number of opinions in the last ten years that say, ‘I don’t understand the fun of selecting commands in video games to perform actions.’ This opinion is just spreading, especially among thel younger audiencewho usually does not role-play.

For different generations of consoles, all character actions can be performed in real time. Actions such as “pull the trigger and your character shoots a gun” and “press the button and your character swings a sword” can now be easily expressed without using a command-based system. It is now a habit among players younger than me to love these games. It therefore no longer makes sense to choose a command prompt to make a decision during a battle.

Yoshida later explained that the goal of Final Fantasy XVI is not only to achieve great commercial success and to criticize you, but also to get the attention of the younger players to create a new fan base. For this reason, turn-based battles will not return in the next chapter of the series, although Yoshida knows how much fun they can generate and wants to keep developing them in the future.

Before we leave, we remind you that Final Fantasy XVI will be available in thesummer of 2023 exclusively on PS5.
