In the world of PC gaming, there are all sorts of technologies that help gamers get the best graphical experience. Unfortunately it didn’t go at the same pace in the console sector, where low-res and 30fps were a constant for millions of users.

Thankfully, the new generation of consoles (namely the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X) said enough, along with the announcement of standards and technologies that promised to catch up with the PC. The VRR tool was one of those technologies that had a lot to offer.

On HDMI 2.1 compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically synchronizes the screen refresh rate with the graphics output of the PS5 console.explained Hideaki Nishino of Sony on the official blog.

This improves the visual performance of PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts such as frame rate issues and screen tearing. This feature will be available globally in the coming days when the update is released to all users.

According to Nishino’s blog, here are the games that will receive VRR support in the coming weeks:

  • Astro playroom
  • Call of Duty: Vanguard
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • death loop
  • fate 2
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  • DIRT 5
  • godfall
  • Marvel’s remastering of Spider-Man
  • Marvel Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderland
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • Tribes of Midgard

Sony will also allow VRR to be applied to games that do not support it. However, Nishino warns that “heResults may vary depending on the TV you are using, the game you are playing, and the visual mode selected for the particular game (if it supports multiple modes).“.

With the addition of VRR support, Sony has finally caught up with Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S, which are already able to use the feature. This is another step towards consoles catching up with PCs. We all win.
