TP-Link is the most popular router brand in the US, the company has 65% of the local market and its devices are best sellers on Amazon.
The authorities’ attention was focused on a network of routers discovered by Microsoft analysts, controlled by Chinese hackers and systematically stealing user data since August 2023. The network, in particular, was used to attack Microsoft users Azure, including government organizations.
At its peak, the botnet consisted of more than 16 thousand routers, smart home devices, cameras and other devices, most of which were manufactured by TP-Link.
According to the WSJ, the United States Department of Justice will prove that the company uses monopolistic practices, including the sale of products at dumped prices to capture the US market.
TP-Link representatives also received a subpoena from the Department of Commerce. The agency has the authority to prohibit or restrict transactions directed at foreign companies if they pose a risk to national security, the newspaper writes.
A TP-Link source told the WSJ that the company is willing to collaborate with the US government to demonstrate “that the company’s device security practices fully comply with industry standards” and that TP-Link itself is “committed to the US market.” “
