Relatives were stunned when they saw that a so-called person got up from his coffin, covered. They even say that he ate, drank a few glasses of soup, and held his father’s hand.

Julio Alberto Vinicio Pierre, 27, died of lung problems caused by smoking in the Dominican Republic. His family had already planned the funeral, but when they saw he was showing “signs of life” they decided to postpone the funeral.

“He’s breathing and that’s proof, in addition to the fact that he eats what we give him,” his relatives told local newspaper Diario Libre.

While curious neighbors gave him water and even performed rituals, they laid him on a mat and waited for him to breathe normally again. “My son is alive. We will do everything possible to make it happen,” said his father, Julio Vinicio.

While the incident created confusion in the country, A pathologist explained that it could all be a denial of grief, and that the issue actually went through a process after formaldehyde administration.

“If they put formalin on it, it will not rot, because it is formalized. When a person dies, they go through different stages, but nothing happens in the first hour and a half. Between 12 and 18 hours everything is difficult. Now, after 6 pm, the corpse naturally begins to soften,” said Sergio Sarita Valdez for the aforementioned local media.

The family also said that it was not cold to the touch, as would be expected with a deceased person. But for Sarita Valdez, her body was able to adapt to room temperature.

Did he get up and eat? That’s what his family and wife said, but this may be due to an illusion created by grieving and the denial that he’s dead. “The most characteristic thing in an unexpected death is the feeling of not being real,” said clinical psychologist Arelis Peguero, analyzing this particular case.

The doctors’ opinion is clear: he died. And this was later confirmed by his relatives when, after keeping him in bed for three days, they touched him and tried to move him, as he did not react and became increasingly stiff.

Although health officials did not go to Julio Alberto’s home, the funerals continued. They buried him in tears at the Cristo Salvador cemetery in the Santo Domingo Este municipality.
