According to lead researcher Professor Andrew Adamacki, fungi are an ideal organism for experiments because their mycelium acts like a human brain, transmitting electrical impulses. Interconnected by the same underground network of mycelium, fungi can transmit electrical signals over significant distances.

This feature allowed scientists to use mushrooms as analogues of motherboard components. Bursts or lack of electrical activity are converted to ones and zeros, respectively, mimicking a binary code.

As you can imagine, mushroom computers can’t compete with traditional hardware: “we just show that it is possible to perform calculations, it is possible to realize basic logic circuits and basic electronic circuits with mycelium”Adamacki explained. “In the future we will be able to grow better computers and controllers on the mycelium.”.
