Over the past few months, ChatGPT has become the biggest trend in the tech sector. The tool created by OpenAI is changing the work or academic activities of many people, and Ubisoft wants to join in the victory too, albeit with its own solution.

As part of the GDC 2023, which takes place in San Francisco, Ubisoft introduced ghostwriteran artificial intelligence tool that aims to help writers create dialogue for NPCs.

Integrating Ghostwriter into the workflow of Ubisoft writers will not only help simplify tedious tasks, but will also create unique dialogues that enhance the overall game experience. First of all, of course, in role-playing games and / or games with an open world, which largely depend on interaction with other characters.

The Ghostwriter will also be directly incorporated into Omen, the internal system Ubisoft developers use to create NPCs. Thanks to this integration, it will be possible to generate characters with specialized dialogues on specific topics. For example, in a racing game, an NPC boasts of his knowledge of the world of cars.

One point to consider is that Ghostwriter does not completely replace the work of a writer. In fact, Ubisoft’s goal is for the dialogue to be a combination of the ideas of its authors and artificial intelligence.

So Ghostwriter works like this. Firstly, the writer must provide a description of the NPC. For example, his motives and the situation in which he found himself. The developer then enters their own dialogue, which the AI ​​analyzes and suggests new lines to complement it. Of course, the option is to accept the proposal or reject it completely.

Ubisoft says that Ghostwriter will help them mainly in the creation of “filler words” in the dialogue. Responsibility for the most important points of the text will remain with the author.

During their GDC conference, Ubisoft showed how Ghostwriter works. When requesting dialogue with a kidnapped NPC, the AI ​​would offer phrases such as “I can’t seem to get out of this.” However, contexts can also be added to it. In this case, it was stated that the hijacker was his own boss. “I’m just one of your employees,” said Ghostwriter.

In another example, a scenario was raised involving a robbery, an attacker, and a police officer. The ghostwriter generated:

“So you robbed toy stores.

– What are you talking about? I’m an adult, I don’t have time for toys.
