Why are AirPods Pro whistling. Is this normal or does it need to be repaired?

If you’ve ever grabbed an AirPods Pro, you’ve most likely come across this.

The bottom line: when you take the headphones in your palm or just in your hand (for example, put them in a case), the headphones emit a strange whistle, sometimes very loud. The sound disappears quickly.

Hundreds of complaints have accumulated in Western forums over the past few years, and some of them have even accumulated to return the headphones under warranty, which is a marriage problem. Most were refused replacements.

To find out the root cause of such sound detection, pay attention to the main AirPods Pro and their features from the “regular” AirPods – the presence of active noise cancellation and Ambient Mode.

This mode (as well as the “Hey Siri” function) requires microphones to work, which are used in AirPods Pro several times at once. They all work constantly.

When you detect the presence of one of the microphones, it records a strong hum, and an echo is also created. It’s kind of like interference during a call when someone has both a microphone and a speaker at the same time.

The Noise Cancellation algorithm or Mic Closed Power Mode is confused by unusual noise, the hardware fails to cancel it along with the echo, and the acoustic speakers emit a sharp, spatial whistle.

Does it harm listeners? Can it be returned under warranty?

The answer to both questions is no. Such a whistle is not a warranty case. Perhaps in some Apple Store they will take pity on you and, as an exception, they will replace you with another model. But on it everything repeats itself in any case.

Apple itself isn’t a problem, as the whistle only triggers extracted functions and doesn’t cause discomfort or hearing loss. It is also not known if this sound damaged the speakers in any way.
