In essence, a semi-moon is a celestial body that orbits the Earth but is gravitationally bound to the Sun. This half-moon was designated 2023 FW13.
It was discovered using the Pan-STARRS telescope at the top of Haleakala volcano in Hawaii. Currently, it is one of the few semi-satellites known to science.
According to scientists, this ancient space satellite dates back to BC. It will continue near Earth and orbiting our planet for at least another 1500 years since 100, until 3700.
Fortunately, neither 2023 FW13 nor any other half-moon like it poses a threat to humans on Earth. 2023 FW13 differs from our Moon in that it orbits well outside our planet’s “Hill sphere” (the region around a planetary body, where its own gravity is the main force pulling moons).
