The Russian neural network GENA will be trained to find viruses and bacteria in bat droppings, said Olga Kardymon, researcher at the AIRI Institute for Artificial Intelligence and head of the Bioinformatics group.

GENA is the first neural network trained on the most complete version of the human genome. The language model, released to the public at the end of March 2022, draws attention to parts of the genome that are biologically significant. Thus, the bioinformatician emphasizes, the neural network can find parts of the genome that scientists are unaware of.

The scope of application is wide. Kardymon notes that another direction could be to sequence the metagenomic community from bat scum, which is one of the main reservoirs for viruses. The scientists will test whether GENA can identify the different genomes of viruses and bacteria within it.
