Researchers from the Baltic Federal University. I. Kant developed and patented a technology for producing synthetic oil from seaweed and biological waste.

Their methods are based on the actual geological process of oil formation. Wet biomass – large algae, excess sludge, sewage sludge and wood waste – is heated in an autoclave that raises the pressure to three to six megapascals. As a result of breaking the bonds in large organic molecules, oil-like substances are formed from them. Scientists emphasize that natural oil was synthesized similarly in ancient oceans.

In addition, during their work, the experts managed to isolate a number of heavy metal cations that act as catalysts in the formation of oil.
