Researchers from the Russian Scientific Center for Surgery. Academician BV Petrovsky and the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute” developed the first domestic model of a biodegradable intervertebral disc prosthesis.

Both intervertebral hernia and erosion or destruction of the vertebrae – osteochondrosis – can cause nerve compression and severe pain. In this case, instead of a disc, a cage – an implant is inserted between adjacent vertebrae, which allows them to grow together. However, the material of modern prostheses – titanium or polyetherketone – often leads to postoperative complications. In addition, only imported and, consequently, expensive cages are available in Russia.

Russian scientists produced the first samples of medicinal products and began testing them on animals. Scientists assure that in a few years it will be possible to use Russian cages in clinical practice.
