Based on an analysis of 45 studies, the researchers found that 40% of major accidents in Russia were caused by fatigue from drivers distracted by gadget screens. Often, drivers’ attention is attracted by video recorders with a screen, a navigation system, a smartphone and a display in the instrument cluster.
High-tech devices are designed to facilitate and help the driver’s life, but often some of their functions are unsafe. A study by German insurance company Allianz shows that more than 60% of traffic accidents are caused by distractions from drivers on various devices.
The work of Russian scientists confirms the hypothesis that it is the screens in the field of view that cause the inattention and fatigue of drivers. The analyzed data included not only quantitative surveys of drivers, but also simulations of the driving process.
There are several ways to deal with the problem. Thus, you can reduce the number of screens, especially of small size. In addition, it is possible to transfer a number of functions to passengers for managing media systems. The installation of driver assistance and monitoring systems will also help – artificial intelligence monitors when a person falls asleep or is distracted and gives an audible signal.
However, it will not be possible to fully automate the process – research has shown that drivers accustomed to autopilot are less responsive to sudden situations and have increased drowsiness.
