Sending high-quality photos on WhatsApp has become available for some messenger testers. on Android and iOS, via an update released this Wednesday (7). The feature has been in development since it was first spotted in February.
With the improvement, higher quality images can be shared than the current standard of Meta’s service, while keeping the original dimensions of the photo. But it should be noted that functionality does not allow sending photos in original resolution as the software still applies slight compression to the mediaaccording to this WABetaInfo.
The option to send HD photos on WhatsApp can be viewed by selecting a large size image from the mobile gallery. As shown in the screenshot below, the user has a choice between the standard quality, which results in a compact and lightweight file, and the high definition version, which creates a larger and heavier file.
When an HD image is sent, the recipient is notified by a flag in the message bubble that it is a larger photo. Another detail is that the feature is only valid for media shared in conversations, not possible to add larger photos to status.
Who has already arrived?
Sending high quality photos is one of the new features of WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.12.13 and WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.11.0.76.. However, not everyone who downloads the updates will have immediate access to the functionality as they are rolled out gradually.
For testers who haven’t gotten the feature yet, it’s expected to be available in the coming weeks. There is no defined date yet for the launch in the stable version of Messenger.
