In the process, Yu ensures that the Chinese government has almost unlimited access to the TikTok database, which allows its members to have a privileged opinion and valuable information.

“We plan to strongly oppose these accusations and nonsensical allegations,” a ByteDance representative told the BBC. The Chinese company also explains that Yu worked there for less than a year and was working on the development of an app called Flipagram at the time, which has been discontinued.

A spokesperson for ByteDance said, “It is interesting that Mr. Yu has made no mention of these allegations in the five years since his job with Flipagram ended in July 2018. His actions are clearly designed to attract media attention.”
