Experiments were performed on a mouse model prone to this neurodegenerative disease. It turned out that repeated alcohol intoxication led to deterioration in cognitive functions two months earlier than normal.

Also, people who abuse alcohol may develop dementia several years earlier.

As part of the experiment, the scientists used rodents with three genetic variants that increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. These mice were exposed to alcohol for several months at doses that mimicked alcohol consumption levels in people with alcohol dependence.

The results showed that, compared with control mice, animals exposed to alcohol exhibited earlier-than-normal deterioration in learning ability, memory of spatial patterns, and cognitive decline.

The scientists plan to continue research and find out how alcohol consumption affects the occurrence and progression of Alzheimer’s disease in people without a genetic predisposition to the disease.
