The model, developed by scientists from Tomsk Polytechnic University, makes it possible to calculate the processes occurring during the interaction of forest combustible substances with a fire flame moistened with water or special extinguishing agents. The researchers’ work was published in the journal Fire.

One of the promising ways to fight forest fires is to create a brake line in front of the burning front. This can be done by spraying water or compounds containing it from an aircraft onto combustible materials – plants, moss, fallen branches and leaves. The fire remains on the line until the wood fuel is completely dry.

The model, created by the TPU researchers based on experimental data, explains the processes that occur in this wet layer during rapid heating, particularly the evaporation of water and thermal decomposition of forest fuel. In addition, the model takes into account the parameters and features of the combustion process, which makes it possible to make calculations for different flame heights, one of its developers IN Butakova TPU Alexander Kondakov.

The use of the model makes it possible to predict the length of the water barrier required to contain the fire. Similar calculations can be made for other extinguishing agents and various types of forest combustible materials.
