Novosibirsk scientists have developed a promising drug that can protect the body from radiation. Studies have shown that the drug, based on a part of yeast RNA, has radioprotective properties. It was successfully tested on mice that survived even after receiving lethal doses of radiation. Scientists hope to create a long-acting radio shield that could protect the body from short bursts of gamma radiation.

The currently available anti-radiation drug Indralin, used in emergency situations by nuclear power plant and submarine workers and people at risk of radiation, has similar properties. Developed by Siberian scientists on the basis of RNA, the new drug has the advantage of longer duration of action compared to Indralin. It can be taken in advance up to two weeks before possible exposure to radiation. Exactly how the drug works in body cells has yet to be determined, but experiments have shown its effectiveness in protecting blood stem cells.

Scientists are also currently developing a technology for mass production of this drug, and this process is scheduled to be completed by mid-2024. Radiation protection drugs will also be required in space conditions, and by 2030 it is expected to develop new tools that can prepare a person for the effects of weightlessness, hypomagnetism and hypomagnetism, according to the statement of Roscosmos executive director Alexander Bloshenko. radiation.
