The feature, which was made available to third-party developers as part of the smart canvas update, is now available to both Google Workspace users and personal Google account holders.

To take advantage of smart chips, users must install the appropriate plug-in from the Google Workspace Marketplace. They can then paste the share link from the third-party app into their Google Docs.

Pressing Tab adds a “module” that previews information about the application and job status. This allows employees to quickly access project progress from a third-party resource without leaving the document.

Various applications offer different applications of so-called “smart chips”; for example, Figma lets you view projects interactively and Atlassian Cloud lets you add related questions in Jira.
