A start-up laboratory Smarttextiles was opened in the Factory science and technology park of the Baltic Federal University (BFU), which develops smart textiles. This laboratory will produce textiles with cooling properties and ultra-fine surgical sutures. The laboratory’s partner was Amperetex company, which specializes in the production of innovative products.

The laboratory will implement two innovative projects. The first is the development of technology for cooling textiles. This effect will be useful in medicine, sports, hot climates and for special purposes. The second project is about the creation of ultra-fine surgical sutures based on polyamide. This material will be useful in vascular, cardio and neurosurgery. There has never been such small diameter seams on the Russian market before.

The IKBFU startup studio has already created three new companies and six more are in the registration process. The University implements the federal project “University Technological Entrepreneurship Platform”, which helps students and university staff to unlock their potential and bring innovative solutions to the market. Within the scope of the project, trainings and accelerators are organized to develop entrepreneurship skills and support projects. The Student Start grant program was also launched, providing financial support of up to 1 million rubles to the winners.
