Sechenov University began developing genetic tests to help detect cancer early and determine the appropriate treatment for each patient. These tests can predict the likelihood of developing certain types of cancer. If a person is already sick, doctors will be able to evaluate which anticancer drug would be effective in a particular situation. This was reported in the press service of the university.
The project to develop these tests will take three years. During this time, scientists will create six kits to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment for brain cancer, breast cancer, bladder cancer and gastrointestinal tract tumors. For this, scientists examine the cancer history of patients and conduct studies to determine the genetic characteristics of these tumors.
There is a lack of such genetic testing in Russia, although their use in clinical practice has been suggested. Andrei Zamyatnin, one of the leading experts of Sechenov University, spoke about this. He noted that it is important not only to develop a technologically advanced product that is not inferior to its Western counterparts, but also to adapt it to the Russian population, taking into account the peculiarities of the genetics of our people.
Marina Nemtsova, vice president of the laboratory, shared that domestic genetic testing will allow to choose the most effective treatment for cancer patients. Targeted drugs that target only tumors with certain mutations can be used in different types of cancer. The aim of the project is to develop test systems for various types of tumors, making them usable and usable all over Russia and improving the quality of life of cancer patients.
