While Nikon has not explained the exact cause of the problem, it is most likely a manufacturing defect in the lens mount. The company identified the serial numbers of the affected cameras and created a web page where users can check if their device needs repair.

As part of the recall, Nikon will cover the shipping costs of affected devices regardless of their warranty status. Z8 camera owners are advised to find the serial number on the back of the camera body and enter the dedicated service advisory website. Repair instructions will be provided after the serial number has been entered.
