A machine learning-based application can clone sounds that would require five minutes of audio recording of a human speech.

Voice authentication is a process in which a user repeats a certain phrase and the system extracts the unique features of the voice and stores it for future use somewhere.

And the latest development by scientists at the University of Waterloo could bypass security measures used to detect fakes. The program removes any signs that indicate that the sound was created by a computer.

The developed software has been reported to be so effective that the author of the project, Professor Urs Hengartner, expressed hope that companies that rely on voice authentication as their main authentication method will take additional measures to ensure security.
