Researchers from the GA Krestov Institute of Chemical Solutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology have synthesized and identified five previously unknown crystal forms of nilutamide, a substance used in combination therapy for prostate cancer.

Crystal forms of the same chemical compound can differ from each other in their properties and, accordingly, have a different effect in treatment – for example, they can be absorbed into the blood faster.

Russian and Indian scientists have found that depending on the crystallization conditions and excipients, nilutamide can form five modifications that differ in the geometry and packing of the molecules in the crystal.

Thus, the most stable modification of the compound always crystallizes from pure organic solvents, and a small addition of nitrogenous cytosine base promotes the formation of another crystal form. The researchers note that such a large number of forms is an extremely rare phenomenon: for only 2% of organic crystals, four or more modifications are still known.
