Researchers from Russia, England and Germany developed the properties of a nickel and aluminum alloy using electromagnetic levitation. The scientists’ work was published in the journal “Advances in Physical Sciences.”
There are many ways to create materials with desired properties under weightless conditions. One of them – electromagnetic levitation – is suitable for capless processing of metals, alloys and semiconductors. It allows you to experiment with samples and examine their physical and chemical properties.
One of the researchers, senior researcher at the Laboratory of Mathematical Modeling, explains that with this method, the sample melts and solidifies under weightless conditions, which makes it possible to avoid the influence of the outer walls of the crucible or vessel on the processing process. Physical and Chemical Processes in the Polyphase Environment of the Ural Federal University Lyubov Toropova.
Physicists managed to obtain samples with a more homogeneous structure – substances that melt without weight solidify more regularly. The materials used in smartphones, tablets and machine parts had a positive effect on their properties – alloys have greater ductility, strength, electrical and thermal conductivity.
In addition, the scientists analyzed several options for the geometry of the coils of the installation. Toropova notes that this makes it possible to provide a wider range of temperature control under stable sample removal condition.
