Today, the thriller “Hypnotic” with Ben Affleck in the title role was released in Russia.
The title of the film in English is simply “The Hypnotist”, but our initiatives decided to add secrecy and keep the English version. This did not save the film, he managed to refute an incomprehensible plot and a very weak acting game.
We have already approached the prime minister and are trying to resolve it in the usual way. Spoiler: it was expected.
This movie is annoying from the start. In everything
What is the movie about: Detective Danny Rourke is looking for his missing daughter. In the course of the investigation, he came across cases that could not be explained. psychic Diana Cruz helps, and together they enter into a dangerous confrontation with a man who can help find their daughter.
Sounds like a good premise for a well-knit thriller, but in fact it is an hour and a half of real mixed genres, scenes and delusional dialogue.
Almost from the first minute, director Robert Rodriguez decided to surprise the attention. Adequate art collection rules? Forget it, it’s for the weak. Let’s just throw everything together and see what happens! Forget about logic, the sequence of events or the motivation of phenomena – everything will get mixed up here anyway, like socks in a washing machine.
Forget about logical connection or sequence of actionshere every frame will surprise you and give you a feeling of complete unpredictability.
Some dialogues and scenes are extremely absurd, they came off the page of a moronic comic. But then you remember who the director of the film is, and everything takes its place. Rodriguez has always liked to choose the absurd in his films.
Among this chaos and absurdity, you can find funny moments. For example, the scene where the hero tries to tear off his arm under the threat of hypnosis is just a masterpiece of the comedy genre! Probably, the director wanted to tell the audience: “Do not take anything seriously, just laugh and enjoy the madness!”
At the same time, the film uses an extremely serious and trying to repeat the elegant “Beginning” with DiCaprio. Dualism or schizophrenia?
Acting will leave mixed feelings. Although the actors do everything in their power to give credibility to their ridiculous character, it seems as if they are just not likely what and whom to play. Ridiculous facial expressions, unnatural dialogues and the absence of at least some emotional intensity – meet the new trend in acting!
Maybe the director really used something strange form of hypnosis on a setAnd this is exactly the effect he plans to get?
At some point, you even think that it’s good that this is a movie, because in real life no one talks like that.
The visual is pure chaos
The real highlight of the film is its visual side. I’m not even sure “visual chaos” is the right definition. The director probably set himself the goal of using possible colors and lighting effects that can only be found in the world of cinema.
The director, along with the cameraman, simply took the paint department and decided to use all the colors at the same time. Genius!
Why do something gracefully when you just can mix all the colors of the rainbow in one porridge? they wanted to discover a style that no one would like. They succeeded. It seems that the filmmakers are breaking the story with strong visual effects, but this only slightly emphasized its inconsistency.
Shame on Ben Affleck

The star of the film is Ben Affleck, he plays the role of a sad detective who is constantly in a state of existential crisis. His daughter is kidnapped, broken up, and now he comes around with a permanently furrowed brow and a sad expression on his face: “I’m thoughtful, sad and surprised at the same time.”
Ben seems to be playing back his role of the inconsolable and incomprehensible heroine in the brilliant thriller Gone Girl. But this time without a spectacular mistress and a cunning wife, but with a strange fortuneteller and sad attempts to investigate a strange bank robbery. It is better to return the mistress, it was better.
Hypnotic is a film that does its best to make us guess, confuse and maybe even laugh a little. It manifests itself in all the rules and stereotypes, and traces of second-rate and absurdity appear in the memory.
We pass by, it is better to do without such tests of patience and spend your time on something more meaningful and interesting.
