Chemists and biologists from Russia have found that “turning off” the mitoregulin protein leads to an acceleration of age-related changes in the kidneys. The results of the study were published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.

Mitochondria not only provide energy to the cell, but are also responsible for storing and transmitting hereditary information. Each gene in the mitochondrial DNA chain contains information about the protein to be produced. One of them, recently discovered – mitoregulin – interacts with the enzyme responsible for the formation of unsaturated fatty acids and cholesterol biosynthesis.

Russian scientists have discovered that by “turning off” the mitoregulin gene in mouse cells, adipose tissue accumulates faster in such animals, and the composition of blood metabolites changes. After that, they decided to focus on the kidneys – failures in the work of mitochondria often became the cause of diseases of this organ.

One of the researchers, Moscow State University Institute of Functional Genomics and AN Belozersky Moscow State University. NV Lomonosov Petr Sergiev. The effects also depended on the sex of the animal: degeneration of the renal tubules was observed in males and a slowing of the filtration rate in the glomeruli in females.

The corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences explains that the cause of these disorders lies in the disruption of the mitochondrial respiratory complex.
