The growth in the use of organic fertilizers and the livestock industry causes an increase in organic waste. This leads to an increase in emissions of nitrogen, phosphorus and other substances. The results can be expressed as air, water and soil pollution.

Developed by Russian experts, the Bayesian network is a graphical probability model that takes into account and connects various data about the region: information about the geography of the region, the pollution of the ecosystem, the dynamics of tree growth, the vital activity of organisms. in the soil and many other parameters.

One of the developers, St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University “LETI” Radio Engineering Systems Department Professor Mikhail Bogachev says that pollutant data of the region can be loaded into the model and predictions can be made for the development of its ecosystem. We tested it in an artificial forest plantation area where a great gray heron colony settled. The development has allowed to correct the course of events there over the past 20 years.

The growth of the bird population led to the heavy accumulation of manure, which significantly increased the concentration of nitrogen, phosphorus and alkali metals in the soil. As a result, the trees gradually stopped growing and dried up, and the birds moved to other trees, expanding the area of ​​​​pollution.
