Dirty rain in Moscow accounts for a small part of the total precipitation and often falls after a long dry period. This was reported by Irina Eremina, a specialist in chemistry and climatology. The expert explained that rainwater is the cleanest water in the world, especially if it rains with heavy rains. But if it doesn’t rain for a long time and then it gets weak, it can be dirty.
Eremina gave an example from 2010, when Moscow was covered in smoke and it did not rain for a long time. After this time the rains were very polluted. They differ from ordinary rains not only in the concentration of substances, but also in their composition.
The composition of natural water, including rain, includes the usual components: calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, ammonium, as well as sulfates, chlorides, nitrates and bicarbonates. Fluorides and phosphates can sometimes be found, but in small quantities. But such substances are found only in polluted rains.
Therefore, dirty rains in Moscow make up an insignificant part of the total precipitation. Pure rains with frequent and large amounts of precipitation are considered the purest waters. However, after a rain-free period, precipitation can be polluted and different from normal rain in both composition and concentration.
