As Elon Musk struggles to fight a $90 million bill from a law firm hired by former Twitter management to force him to complete the purchase of the social network, his competitor Threads is gathering momentum and the Ministry of Digital Affairs is discussing royalties in favor of Russian Post with markets. We continue to follow the exciting twists and turns in the life of businessmen in Russia and around the world.

Market tax in favor of the Russian Post, opening of Mexico, Elon Musk disputes: the main thing for business July 8

  • The head of the Ministry of Digital Development, Maksut Shadayev, said that the department had started talks with the markets of a 0.5% tax in favor of the Russian Post for placing collection points in branches. The tax is supposed to affect only companies with revenues above 1 billion rubles a year.
  • The Ambassador of Mexico to the Russian Federation said that the country is open to the introduction of the Russian payment system Mir, and also advised Russian investors to invest in areas related to AI and cybersecurity (RIA Novosti).
  • One of China’s largest electric vehicle manufacturers, GAC Aion New Energy Automobile, is investing $170 million to build a new factory in Thailand (Nation).
  • In the center of more than a million cities, only 9% of the new buildings of the total volume of the country are sold (bnMAP.pro & Reburg). At the same time, new buildings in New Moscow have fallen in price by 2.1% since the beginning of the year.
  • In June 2023, the number of cleaning companies in Russia increased by 5% year-on-year to 37.7 thousand (Kontur.Focus).
  • The American company Mars, a food and feed manufacturer, announced the transfer of more than $25 million to Ukraine from March 2022. At the beginning of the year, the Moscow region prosecutor’s office began to check at the company “the reliability of income received and compliance with taxes paid to the Russian treasury”.
  • The new social network Threads from Meta (recognized as extremist in Russia and banned) attracted 70 million users in two days. “This far exceeds our expectations,” admitted Mark Zuckerberg, whom Elon Musk called the “snake,” accusing him of copying Twitter.
  • And Twitter’s parent company, X Corp, is suing Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, which billed the company $90 million for its services. Last year, former Twitter executives hired lawyers to force Musk to buy the social network. The invoice issued takes into account the months of completion of the transaction, when, in reality, the lawyers did not provide services. X Corp believes that this is an exploitation of the situation.
